The enzootic bovine leukemia virus (BLV) belongs to the Retroviridae family, genus Deltaretrovirus and is worldwide distributed. The BLV is included of OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) listed diseases, therefore subjected to restrictions in the international trade. In addition this agent causes economic losses in production and productivity of infected animals, especially dairy cattle. The Santa Catarina state is the fifth milk producer in Brazil, producing over 2.4 million liters of milk in 2010, concentrated mainly in the western state. Several Brazilian states have reported the prevalence of this agent in their herds, however Santa Catarina state lacks this information. The aim of this work was to identify the prevalence of seropositive animals for bovine leukemia virus in dairy animals in the western region state. To this, blood samples from 321 animals of 16 properties in the region west of the state were randomly collected, and the serum was extracted to perform the agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID). The test kit used for the diagnosis of enzootic bovine leukemia was developed by Parana Institute of Technology (TECPAR). This kit detect antibodies against the viral glycoprotein gp51 and the AGID test was performed according to manufacturer specifications. The prevalence observed was 29% (93/321) among the animals tested, and the 50% (8/16) in herds analyzed. On the farm with the highest prevalence, 17 of 19 animals were positive (89%) and the farm that had de lower prevalence only one of 15 animals was positive (6%). These data demonstrate that BLV is present in dairy cattle in Santa Catarina state, indicating that sanitary actions should be adopted to control and reduce the dissemination of this agent in the herd. |
